As a core sector of the metallurgical industry, steelworks operate under extreme conditions, with production equipment constantly exposed to high temperatures, heavy loads, impact loads and dust contamination. Thanks to their unique double-row symmetrical roller structure, self-aligning capability and high radial load capacity, self-aligning roller bearings have become core support components for critical steel mill equipment, such as rolling mills, continuous casting machines and converters. This article will systematically elaborate on the core value of self-aligning roller bearings in the steel industry from three perspectives: application scenarios, technical advantages and typical case studies.

Rolling Mill Systems: The ‘Steel Backbone’ Supporting Extreme Loads

Applications: Work rolls, support rolls, and gearbox housings.

Operating Challenges:

Radial loads of several hundred tonnes, with high-frequency impacts leading to bearing fatigue failure.

Significant temperature rise during high-speed operation requires reliable support from the lubrication system.

Bearing Solutions:

Large self-aligning roller bearings (e.g. 241 series): Manufactured from carburised steel or high-carbon chromium bearing steel (GCr15SiMn), with oxygen content reduced through vacuum degassing treatment, resulting in a fatigue life 1.8 times that of international standards.

Optimised cage design: Split carbon steel cages replace traditional brass cages, with increased thickness to enhance load-carrying capacity; the number of rollers is reduced to 20, roller length is shortened to 120 mm, and cage beam width is increased to prevent rollers from falling out during assembly.

Active inner ring technology: Replaces fixed inner flanges, allowing axial movement, evenly distributing the load across two rows of rollers and avoiding stress concentration.

Case Study: The main reducer in a steel mill’s hot rolling production line utilised the optimised 241 series bearings, extending service life from 4 months to over 1 year and reducing downtime costs by more than 3 million yuan per year.
